How Long Do Dreadlock Extensions Last?

One of the most common questions we get at Girl On The Moon Dreadlocks is: how long do dreadlock extensions actually last? The answer depends on a few key factors — the material, how well you care for them, and how you wear them. Let's break it down.

Wool Dreadlock Extensions: Built to Last

Wool dreadlock extensions are among the most durable options available. With proper care, a high-quality set of wool dreads can last 1–3 years or more. Unlike synthetic alternatives, wool naturally felts and tightens over time, which actually improves the look and feel of your locs as you wear them.

Factors That Affect Longevity

1. Material Quality

Not all wool is created equal. At Girl On The Moon, we use premium wool that's hand-rolled and carefully crafted to hold its shape through regular wear, washing, and styling. After 6 years in the field, we've tested multiple different breeds of wool to custom blend a mix of fibers that are optimized for next-to-skin wear. Through extensive testing, we've been able to pinpoint the best fibers to allow for the softest, most comfortable, lightweight set possible. Cheap wool extensions may unravel or pill quickly — ours are made to last.

2. How You Wear Them

How you wear them and how long you wear them is what truly matters. The 3 strand install method is a simple, foolproof way to install and can last anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks per install. The side braid method, on the other hand, is designed for a more secure, longer-lasting install — keeping the roots as protected as possible. Want to learn how to install at home? Click here.

3. Care Routine

  • Wash gently — We recommend washing once a week using your favorite shampoo for your hair type. It doesn't have to be a dreadlock-specific shampoo — just something that already works for you!
  • Air dry completely — The best way to do this is to wash your hair in the morning or midday. Wring out as much water as possible — wool acts like a sponge, so you can wring them out fairly easily. Gravity will pull the remaining water down to the tips, so keep a towel nearby to towel dry your ends every once in a while. This helps them dry faster.
  • Avoid extra products — Skip conditioner and any hair oils on the scalp, as these will cause slippage and unnecessary buildup on the scalp and locs.

4. Proper Storage

When not in use, be sure to deep clean your set first. Soak them in a bucket of the hottest water from your tap mixed with 1 tsp of dish soap. Soak for about half an hour, then rinse until no soap remains in the locs — rinsing usually takes a good 5–10 minutes to ensure all soap is fully removed. Then hang dry in your shower or outside. Once completely dry, hang your extensions on a hanger to allow gravity to pull them down into the shape they'll be installed in. This also makes your next install even easier to manage — your set will already be laid out and ready to go!

Signs It's Time for a New Set

Even the best-cared-for extensions have a lifespan. Here are signs it might be time to refresh your look:

  • Significant frizzing or unraveling at the tips
  • Thinning or breakage near the root attachment point
  • A stubborn odor that won't wash out — this can happen from environmental exposure like cigarette smoke, or from mildew if the locs weren't dried completely before storage
  • Loss of shape or texture that can't be restored

Getting the Most Out of Your Set

The good news? With the right care, wool dreadlock extensions are one of the most cost-effective protective styles you can invest in. Many of our customers wear their sets for over a year before needing a replacement — and some come back for a second set simply because they want a new color or style, not because their original set wore out.
